Duke Of Edinburgh

What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is all about going the extra mile – gaining new skills, pushing yourself physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time, you’ll gather friendships, experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. It is a fun adventure and major challenge, where three progressive Award levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) and a wide range of activities offer endless possibilities with the world’s leading youth achievement award as well as the chance to enhance further education and career prospects.

Who is the Award open to at Churchdown School Academy?

Initially the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will be available to a restricted number of students in Year 10 who will work towards the Bronze award. The number of students able to participate will grow substantially over the next few years.

What does the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award consist of?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme consists of four sections which are:

Volunteering – Making a difference to other people’s lives.
Physical – Focusing on your health and fitness while having fun.
Skills – Getting better at something you do or trying something new.
Expedition – Being part of a team and experiencing the great outdoors.
How long will it take to do the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

It should take around 6 months to complete the Award at Bronze level. This requires that the young person participates in the Volunteering, Physical or Skills section for a minimum of 3 months (one section must be done for a 6 month period), before planning and taking part in an expedition which includes overnight camping. All of these activities must take place outside of normal school hours.
